In 2022 there were just under 900 thousand domestic workers and regular carers in Italy, with a reduction compared to 2021 of -7.9% (-76,548 workers): out of a total of 1.86 million domestic workers the share of irregular workers was instead equal to 51, 8%.
This is what emerges from the annual report on domestic work, promoted by the DOMINA Observatory, according to which this particular sector, despite having a rather low productivity compared to other economic sectors, still offers a positive contribution to the Italian GDP, equal to 1%.
In 2022, according to the study presented today in the Senate, family spending on domestic work decreased for the first time, after the progressive increase recorded since 2017.
Specifically, considering the 1.86 million workers overall, family spending reaches 14.3 billion, of which 7.7 for carers and 6.6 for domestic workers.
This is a sector characterized by a strong foreign presence (69.5% of the total), especially from Eastern Europe, and by a female prevalence (86.4%), although in recent years there has been an increase in both men and the female component. Italian.
