Highlights: Climbing 50 steps every day reduces the risk of heart attack and stroke by up to 32 percent. Researchers at Peking University in China evaluated data from 458,860 adults from Great Britain. To prevent the dangers of sitting for long periods of time, the World Health Organization recommends 21 minutes of exercise daily. The risk of so-called atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases (ASCVD) was reduced by a full 20 percent in those study participants who climbed more than five flights of stairs every day.

The cost of a gym can be saved, at least when it comes to heart health.

Researchers discovered how effective climbing stairs is.

It's tempting: elevators and escalators also take you up - without much effort.

But the comfortable option promotes the already increasing lack of exercise and thus also common diseases such as diabetes and dementia.

Heart diseases such as high blood pressure and life-threatening consequences such as heart attacks and strokes are also promoted by too little exercise.

A good reason to incorporate exercise more often into your everyday life.

This doesn't always have to be a time-consuming process.

Even simple measures such as brisk walks and relaxed bike rides reduce the risk of dying prematurely.

This is the conclusion reached by various research groups who examined how much exercise is necessary to compensate for frequent sitting.

The World Health Organization also has a recommendation: To prevent the dangers of sitting for long periods of time, it recommends 21 minutes of exercise daily.

50 steps daily are intended to protect the heart from disease

Climbing stairs has particularly good effects on the cardiovascular system.

These are the study results of an international research team.

According to the study authors, climbing at least five floors every day is associated with a significantly lower risk of heart disease.

Anyone who lives in an old house is often forced to take the stairs because there is no elevator.

A clear advantage for your health.

The risk of so-called atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases (ASCVD) was reduced by a full 20 percent in those study participants who climbed more than five flights of stairs every day.

ASCVD refers to diseases caused by plaque buildup in the arteries.

The cause is usually arteriosclerosis (hardening of the arteries, atherosclerosis).

The vascular disease causes the arteries to narrow and harden due to deposits.

For their study, researchers led by Zimin Song from the School of Public Health at Peking University in China evaluated data from 458,860 adults from Great Britain.

To better compare the data, the scientists equated ASCVD with coronary heart disease and ischemic stroke.

“Climbing more than five floors (approximately 50 steps) daily was associated with a lower risk of ASCVD, regardless of disease susceptibility.

“Participants who stopped climbing stairs between the start of the study and the repeat survey (editor’s note: a repeat survey was conducted five years after the study) had a higher risk of ASCVD compared to those who never climbed stairs,” the researchers wrote in their study. which was published in the specialist journal “Atherosclerosis”.
