"There has been heated controversy over that person who received a 4-year sentence for road manslaughter and was subjected to house arrest. We must always think also of the social alarm that is caused by these crimes and the desperation of the victims or of relatives who see a sort of impunity on the part of those who commit the crimes. We are very guaranteed on this, as an emphasis on the presumption of innocence before the trial but also on the certain application of the punishment after conviction".
Thus the Minister of Justice Carlo Nordio at the presentation of the 'School exercise of freedom' program, in the prison of Civitavecchia.
"In Italy it has very often been easy to enter prison before the trial as a presumed innocent person and perhaps leave after the final conviction as a confirmed guilty person. This is a situation that we are trying to remedy but obviously it must be combined with the sovereign decisions of the judiciary ".
