The meeting that took place last night (Wed) between the Minister of Environmental Protection and the management of the Or Yehuda municipality ended with great news for the residents of the city: the Ministry of Environmental Protection announced that it will support the promotion of the urban renewal plan for the southern neighborhoods in Or Yehuda, which applies to approximately 2,200 housing units in the city.

We will remind you that the program was announced not long ago by the State of Israel as one of the 3 flagship programs, as it holds the opportunity to renew the entire southern part of the city of Or Yehuda, whose residents live in buildings that are prone to collapse.

As mentioned, Minister Silman together with the professional teams stated at the meeting that they will not oppose the plan and will support its submission to the planning committees.

The southern neighborhoods plan was born out of the understanding that it will include dealing with the proximity to Israel as well as restrictions on uses and construction and the impact of noise and flight safety on the city. To this end, a dedicated task force was established for the project which is shared by the Or Yehuda Municipality, the Governmental Authority for Urban Renewal and Vatml.

The project team has worked in recent years on planning and arranging an outline regarding the issue of noise and restrictions on construction.

One of the complex tasks of the planning team was trying to overcome the large and complex statutory barriers of the noise impact survey on Or Yehuda.

Therefore, in recent years, work was carried out whose goal was the accuracy of the noise complexes by conducting up-to-date noise surveys, all this taking into account the maximum utilization and even beyond that of the operation of the airport and the effect of landings and takeoffs on the location of the residences in the city.

At the working meeting with Minister Silman, the representatives of the Ministry of Environmental Protection announced that they accept the proposed planning and the recommendations of the professional team, and that they are aware that a combination of correct planning based on the performance of up-to-date tests will enable the proposed planning, despite the proximity to Israel.

"The clear and important statement of the Ministry of Environmental Protection of the environment and of Minister Idit Silman constitutes another important step towards depositing the plan," states the mayor, Liat Shochat. "This is undoubtedly a flagship program with wide-ranging implications and I am glad that we have the ministry's backing to promote it with all its vigor.

This is an opportunity to thank the professionals at the Ministry of Environmental Protection for the fruitful cooperation that has been taking place in recent years, which allows us to promote many projects and programs."

The work of the environmental unit managed by Nurit Shulman was also presented at the meeting. The work of the unit was highly praised for its planning and meeting the goals of environmental education and the continuous and fruitful relationship that exists with the representatives of the Ministry of Environmental Protection, and it was also explained about the "Urban Nature Survey", a comprehensive research work as part of a call funded by the Ministry of Environmental Protection carried out through the Society for the Protection of Nature, which mapped and located urban nature spaces throughout the city.
