In order to get through the day adequately hydrated, you should drink plenty of fluids.

The healthiest is: water.

But which water is the healthiest?

You should drink two to three liters of fluid a day to ensure your body is adequately hydrated.

When it comes to drinks, there is a wide range of juices, from soft drinks to regular water.

Water drinkers also know that not all water tastes the same and opinions differ when it comes to discussing whether it is tap water or mineral water.

But what is actually the best water?

The healthiest tap water in Germany

In a series of tests, Stiftung Warentest tested the water from the tap in around 20 German towns, reports

heidelberg24.de

.

In addition to the five largest cities in Germany - Berlin, Hamburg, Munich, Cologne and Frankfurt am Main - the testers selected 15 other places that have to do with special challenges in their area.

These include, for example, regions used intensively for agriculture or places where water can be contaminated with natural substances from rocks.

Tap water is considered the most strictly controlled food in Germany.

The drinking water samples were examined and compiled for 126 substances.

Unlike mineral water, which comes from deep protected sources, drinking water comes from groundwater, rivers, lakes and dams.

The limit values of the Drinking Water Ordinance - whether for nitrate, uranium or arsenic - were adhered to in all samples.

These cities have the healthiest (best) tap water in Germany:

  • 1st place: Hamburg

  • 2nd place: Alsfeld

  • 3rd place: Munich

  • 4th place: Meiningen

The healthiest mineral water in Germany

Figuring out which water is the healthiest (or best) is a time-consuming endeavor.

After all, there are different types of water, different parameters that need to be taken into account and, last but not least, different tastes.

While Germany is one of the countries with the purest tap water, bottled water performs differently in this country.

Both Stiftung Warentest and Öko-Test have set out to test bottled water.

Some results are downright shocking, others are encouraging.

Mineral water is often advertised as to which pure sources the refreshing water comes from and how rich it is in minerals.

But it is not uncommon for mineral water to come from plastic bottles and could be contaminated by the packaging alone.

And the water itself may also have come into contact with pollutants.

According to the mineral water tests by Stiftung Warentest and Öko-Test, these are the healthiest waters:

  • 1st place: Aquintus Medium

  • 2nd place: Frische Brese Marius Mineral-Quelle Medium

  • 3rd place: Kaufland K-Classic Medium

  • 4th place: Gerolsteiner Medium

What is the best water in Europe?

But the quality of the water is regularly checked not only in Germany, but throughout Europe.

With a water quality of 97.9 percent or 255 of the 261 domestic bathing spots, Austria has the best bathing water (for swimming) in a comparison between 26 EU countries as well as Albania and Switzerland.

But according to the OECD (Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development), nowhere is cleaner air and water than in Iceland.

Icelanders are 99 percent satisfied with their water.

Quite surprisingly, the best bottled mineral water comes from Italy.

Lauretana is probably the lightest water in Europe and pleasantly soft.

Its low sodium and low mineral content make it ideal for conscious nutrition.

The natural water comes from the Lauretana spring in Italy and is bottled unfiltered and without mechanical filling processes.

What is the healthiest water to drink?

Water from the tap, mineral water, sparkling or still?

There are many different types of water.

Medium mineral water is the most popular in Germany.

But which water is healthier – tap or mineral water?

To answer this question, you need to take a quick look at the differences between the types of water.

Mineral water is groundwater with special properties.

Tap water is a collective term for water that is transported through – surprise – pipes.

Both types of water are strictly checked.

Mineral water is regulated by the Mineral and Table Water Ordinance (Min/TafelWV).

Drinking water, on the other hand, is checked by individual suppliers on site and processed and provided by waterworks.

According to Stiftung Warentest, the quality is controlled more strictly than any other food in Germany.

Basically, both types of water are recommended.

Carbonated mineral water is no “unhealthier” than the still version and is only unsuitable for people with stomach problems.

The taste depends on the drinker's preferences.

What water do doctors recommend?

Doctors often recommend drinking low-sodium water.

Healthy mineral water also contains calcium and magnesium.

From a content of 50 milligrams per liter, a mineral water can be described as containing magnesium.

If a mineral water contains more than 150 milligrams of calcium per liter, it is said to contain calcium.

Regional mineral water is usually very environmentally friendly because short transport routes mean lower CO2 emissions.

Which water you ultimately drink is up to the individual.

Still, non-carbonated water is more susceptible to germs than carbonated water.

However, carbon dioxide can cause heartburn and flatulence in sensitive people.

One thing is certain, however, if you drink too many smoothies and juices, you risk developing fatty liver disease.
