Verdi warning strikes cause chaos in air traffic.

Around 200,000 passengers are affected and have to change their travel plans.

They need to know that.

Munich – Travelers are once again facing challenges due to a strike.

While protests are already underway at university hospitals and in public transport, the Verdi union has announced warning strikes at around eleven airports for Thursday in the collective bargaining dispute in the aviation security industry.

The airport association ADV predicts around 1,100 flight disruptions, including cancellations and delays.

An estimated 200,000 passengers are affected.

Here is some important information for passengers.

Flight strike on Thursday – These airports are affected

Verdi has announced warning strikes at eleven airports across Germany: in addition to the largest domestic German airport, Frankfurt, the capital city airport of Berlin and Düsseldorf are also affected.

In contrast, the Munich hub remains unaffected by the strike.

There are also no disruptions to security staff at Nuremberg Airport.

However, disruptions must also be expected here, as flights could be redirected to Nuremberg and Munich.

Affected airports at a glance:

  • Frankfurt

  • Berlin

  • Dusseldorf

  • Cologne/Bonn

  • Stuttgart

  • Hanover

  • Hamburg

  • Bremen

  • Dresden

  • Leipzig/Halle

  • Erfurt

The impact of the strike varies widely.

Some airports have announced that there will be no departures.

This applies, for example, to Berlin, Hamburg, Hanover and Stuttgart.

Recently, the nationwide farmers' protests also led to numerous restrictions for travelers.

In Hamburg, farmers even spontaneously blocked the port without prior notice.

Lufthansa informs passengers which airports they should not come to

Passengers are unlikely to be able to board at Frankfurt Airport on Thursday.

They are asked not to come to the airport and to contact their airlines to find alternative travel options.

However, intercontinental and European flights can operate, which is important for connecting passengers.

How to find out if your flight will be canceled due to the strike

As a rule, the respective airline is the contact person for information about your own flight, rebooking options and alternatives.

The airports themselves often provide flight status information for departures and arrivals on their websites.

In the event of a flight cancellation due to a strike or a delay of more than three hours, the airline must offer travelers alternative transport to their destination - for example by rebooking them on another flight.

This often happens automatically.

Or the airline offers the option of converting the ticket for domestic flights into a train ticket.

When operations will return to normal varies depending on the airport, as the duration depends on the end and start of the shift, according to a Verdi spokesman.

The strike could be over by late evening at one location on Thursday and last until midnight at another.

The goal is for air traffic to resume as usual on Friday, according to the union.

Airport strike in Germany – Verdi says it is negotiating for 25,000 employees

The industrial dispute can be traced back to the collective bargaining round for the aviation security industry.

Verdi says it is negotiating there for around 25,000 employees.

They check passengers, luggage and staff at the airports.

Without them, no operation in the security areas is possible.

Verdi is calling for a flat-rate increase in hourly wages of 2.80 euros and faster surcharges for a period of one year.

Aviation security assistants in the lowest salary group currently earn 20.60 euros per hour, which, based on 160 hours of work per month, results in a gross salary of just under 3,300 euros.

There are also surcharges for night work, Sundays and public holidays and overtime.

The last time there were warning strikes in aviation safety was in March of last year.

At that time it was about the working conditions of the employees, who had achieved significant wage increases in recent years.
