EU states and the European Parliament agree on a new labeling requirement for honey: In future, all countries of origin must be specified for honey mixtures.

The phrase “mixture of honey from EU countries and non-EU countries” is often written on honey packaging.

This vague formulation will soon come to an end, because in the future all countries of origin will have to be listed individually on honey.

So far, honey mixtures - i.e. honey that does not come from just one country - only have to state whether they come from the EU or not.

HEIDELBERG24 reports.

Proportion of honey from each country must be stated

The EU also says that the proportion of honey from each country must be stated in the future.

Before the rules can come into force, Parliament and EU states must formally approve them, but this is considered a formality.

Individual countries may decide that the obligation to indicate the percentage on the label only applies to the four largest proportions, the EU states continued.

There should be an exception for packaging weighing less than 30 grams; here the names of the countries of origin can also be abbreviated using a code.

These measures are intended to make it easier for consumers to identify the exact origin of honey when there are different countries of origin.

New rules for juices and jams are also planned

Stricter rules for juices are also planned.

In the future, juices will only be allowed to be labeled as “reduced sugar” if at least 30 percent of the naturally occurring sugar has been removed.

However, no sweeteners may be used.

Jam and jam suppliers also have to adapt to changes.

At least 450 grams of fruit will soon have to be used for one kilogram of jam or jam.

This should benefit the good taste.
