A truck with an Argentine license plate caused a stir in Punta del Este, specifically in the Rambla Brava area.
There the Police found her after being intensively searched for the
extraordinary number of
traffic violations she had accumulated without paying: more than 150 fines with a value of more than 25 thousand dollars.
According to reports from the Municipality of Maldonado, this high-end Volkswagen Taos committed an astonishing total of
177 fines for speeding and crossing red lights
in the period between March 1, 2023 and January 15, 2024. That is, about
17 fines per month
or
one every two days
.
The Traffic authorities, alarmed by this situation, requested the collaboration of the Police to find the whereabouts of the offending driver.
According to El Observador, he is an Argentine citizen who resides in Maldonado.
They estimate that the total amount of fines exceeds
25 thousand dollars
, a staggering figure that reflects the number of violations committed.
The total value of the fines, in addition, shows a surprising, almost shocking fact: it is almost equivalent to the current price of that truck model, which is estimated at
29 thousand dollars
.
According to records from the Single Vehicle Income Collection System (Sucive), the infractions of the Argentine driver began in August 2022 and continued to accumulate until January 15, 2024, indicated that Uruguayan newspaper.

The predominant fines are for speeding and only three infractions are for not respecting traffic lights.
The vast majority of these violations occurred in Maldonado, with one exception: he was once caught in the department of Canelones.
This is not an isolated incident.
The mayor's office noted that other Argentine license plates were detected involved in similar violations, suggesting a
recurring problem
that is being actively addressed by local authorities.
And they remembered that in October they caught another luxury vehicle with an Argentine license plate: a Mercedes Benz with 85 violations on its history.
Juan Pígola, Director of Traffic of the Municipality of Maldonado, pointed out that more than 15% of traffic violations in the department
are committed by foreigners
.
These incidents increased during the tourist season, representing up to 25% of the total offenses committed.
Although the percentage stabilized between 15% and 20%, it is a matter of concern for local authorities.
From the Municipality, a resolution is expected from the Ministry of Transportation and Public Works (MTOP) that allows fines to be imposed on foreigners, which must be paid when leaving the country.
This measure seeks to dissuade foreign drivers from committing violations in Uruguayan territory and guarantee road safety in the region.
