This is one of the main announcements of Gabriel Attal's general policy speech: the abolition of the specific solidarity allowance (ASS) for the unemployed at the end of their rights, who will switch to active solidarity income (RSA).
A substitution which is enough to question the French, many of whom were unaware of the very existence of this social assistance.
The left and associations immediately took action to denounce a measure targeting the poorest.
The ASS, which amounts to 545 euros per month, benefits 300,000 low-income people, subject to a means test: monthly resources must not exceed 1,271 euros for a single person or 1,998 euros for a couple.
The cost of this system is around 2 billion per year.
Its replacement by the RSA, the amount of which is close - 550 euros in 2024, after deduction of the housing package - should however be equivalent for some of the beneficiaries.
