According to the medical manual
MSD Manual
, systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic inflammatory autoimmune disease of the connective tissue.
According to information from the
University Hospital of Zurich (USZ),
the immune system of those affected attacks the body's own healthy cells and triggers an inflammatory reaction.
This in turn can lead to organ damage.
The kidneys, joints, skin, mucous membranes and the walls of blood vessels are particularly affected.
As a result of SLE, diseases of the blood, joints, kidneys, nervous system, lungs, gastrointestinal tract and other organs and tissues can eventually occur.
Patients with SLE often suffer from a variety of symptoms.
Pronounced tiredness (also called fatigue), dryness of the mucous membranes, recurring aphthous ulcers (painful inflammation in the mouth), hair loss and wandering joint pain are typical complaints.
In addition, around a third of patients are affected by the so-called butterfly rash (symmetrical and raised redness on both cheeks that runs down the bridge of the nose and the forehead).
In more than 50 percent of those affected, the kidneys are also affected.

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE): Autoimmune disease primarily affects young women
According to the
MSD Manual,
70 to 90 percent of patients are young women of childbearing age.
It can also affect older men and women, as well as newborns and children (mostly girls).
According to media reports, Broadus is said to have stopped taking her medication a few months before the stroke.
However, it is not known whether this was done in consultation with a doctor and whether stopping the medication or her illness led to her current health condition.
