A receipt gives the impression that the restaurant or the waiter may have tipped themselves.

The anger is correspondingly great.

But the case is different.

Graz – A photo is circulating on Facebook and

It appears that the waiter may have left himself a tip on the receipt.

The 3.90 euros are marked with a blue highlighter - probably digital using an image editing program.

Graz: Restaurant receipts make a lot of people really angry - but everything is completely different

The reactions are sometimes very drastic comments.

“Impudence!!!”, “That’s audacious”, “I could go bankrupt”, “I wouldn’t pay!”

When they make a fuss, call the police,” “Pure rip-off,” “A landlord does that to me exactly once,” or “Outrageous,” just a small selection.

What most people who react like this or angrily share the photo probably don't know: Everything is different!

The photo appeared in this form for the first time on January 17th and spread from there to X (see above).

However, if you look closely, it is certain that someone sent it online in a manipulative way.

To turn people against the restaurant?

Or to generally stir up discontent?

The fact is: The original receipt was printed on January 17th in the Austrian weekly newspaper “Woche”, as can still be seen online in the free ePaper of the Graz regional edition (page 32).

And that's a gastro review!

The title is “Real home cooking in the Graz Gösser Bräu”.

The author was there for the rehearsal dinner and documented it with his receipt.

It is customary for this section of the paper to include the receipt.

You can still see the photo circulating on social media: the caption from the newspaper including the photo credit.

This finally confirms that someone took it from there and misused it.

Intentionally or as a result of a misunderstanding.

Graz (Austria): Wirt makes it clear that tips are not automatically charged

The trouble also comes unexpectedly for Robert Grossauer.

The restaurateur, whose family also runs the “El Gaucho” restaurant in Munich, clarified when asked by our editorial team: “This invoice is a real invoice that was reproduced in a daily newspaper.

The editor gave this tip voluntarily.

Apparently this caused the misunderstanding.

And since it's going viral, I would like to make it clear: Here, at Gösser Bräu in Graz, tips are not calculated automatically; that doesn't correspond to our company culture.

And that doesn’t make any sense, we would annoy our guests.”

Then why does the tip appear on the receipt?

Grossauer also has a simple explanation for this: “Some of our guests would like the tip to be included on the bill.

Because it's so easy to give a tip for card payments and company invoices." The newspaper's gastronomy critic probably simply had the tip for the professional test meal printed so that it could be reimbursed.

It was really unforeseeable that someone would pull the original receipt out of the newspaper, rework it with a highlighter and repost it in the wrong context.

Landlord Grossauer emphasizes: “In our hotel, guests are of course free to decide whether they want to tip and, of course, how much.” The author of the restaurant review in “Woche” confirms to our editorial team that he tips voluntarily have given.

What is real, however, is the toilet and cup fee at a restaurant in a large ski area.
