In December 2023 the social hardship index detected by Confcommercio stood at 13.1 (-0.5 compared to November).
Contributing to the reduction - explains a note - was both the return of inflation for goods and services with high purchasing frequency (which fell to 4.4% from 4.6% in the previous month) and the reduction in widespread unemployment ( 7.8% compared to 8.1% in November).
In this context, the centrality of a positive trend in the labor market for the stabilization or reduction of the area of social hardship in the coming months is confirmed.
On average for the whole of 2023 the indicator stood at 15.6 (1.3 tenths of a point less in comparison with 2022).
After the peak recorded in the first two months of the year (17.8), the MIC showed a progressive and significant tendency to decrease, the synthesis of a decisive reduction in inflation and a progressive and constant improvement in the labor market, which is also attenuation in recent months.
Having adjusted the inflationary side, the employment dynamic remains central to the dynamics of social hardship measured in the macroeconomic metric.
