A lot of football, a lot of politics, price increases, school and then Sanremo, even before the wars, before climate change.

They are, in the order described, the topics that Italians discussed most on social media in 2023, with a substantial but only apparent parallel with the hierarchy of news reported by the media.

This was verified by an innovative survey on Italian society that appears from conversations on the web, on social media: the SocialData annual report which extrapolated the topics of online discussion and then had them analyzed by AI.

A picture emerges that is in some ways obvious and in others surprising: if only because, as Paolo Mieli noted when commenting on the data, "we are faced with an epochal event: this is the first survey done in Italy on what they are really talking about people. In which the information we collect is available in an indirect and unfiltered way, without the subjects knowing they are being 'intercepted'".

And therefore, from this analysis, without the knowledge of the interviewees, it emerges that politics still interests people.

Obviously much less than the football championship which mobilized social users in 2023 with over 2.8 billion interactions on posts.

Politics, with 1.6 billion interactions, has stirred up the debate among Internet users almost as much as that of security.

The topic of crime and safety is in fact among the social needs most cited by Italians on the web, with 9.6 million pieces of content that, in 2023, mentioned this word, and 1.8 billion interactions.

Yet within this "sentiment" the issue of femicides, harassment and stalking caused only 54 million interactions, compared to the 175 million attributed to the issue of thefts, robberies and assaults and the 99 million on murders.

Even on the topic of work, compared to the 11 million contents and 1.5 billion interactions, the vast majority of users are above all concerned about the value of salaries, with 129 million interactions, compared to the issues of sudden deaths (23 million) or of unemployment (20 million).

As for the more political chapter, in the hierarchy of the most cited politicians, Meloni and Salvini stand out, but this is not surprising, even if Schlein appears after them and only after Conte, despite the fact that the M5s leader can boast an undoubtedly larger audience behind him. linked to the web universe.

Among politicians, the prime minister is the one who generates the greatest interest in 2023: in fact, over 253 million interactions have been generated in contents that explicitly mention her.

Behind her is Matteo Salvini with 70.5 million interactions and Elly Schlein with 47.6 million while Conte has 25.9 million.

Finally, another interesting fact stands out relating to 'celebrity' deaths: Berlusconi's death catalysed the sum of all the other 9 farewells of famous people in 2023 on the web, far surpassing, with 672 thousand mentions, even that of the two-time president of Repubblica, Giorgio Napolitano, only reached 103 thousand.
