The cult snack: Currywurst
Who invented it?
Berlin and the Ruhr area have been arguing for decades over the home of bratwurst in a spicy sauce.
But no matter where it comes from, the currywurst is not only a hit in every snack bar across the country, but is also voted the most popular canteen food among Germans year after year.
Depending on the region, the pork sausage is either scalded or fried and then chopped into small pieces.
The sauce should be homemade because it is the pride of every self-respecting chip shop.
To celebrate German Unity Day, we came up with a household-friendly take on one of Germany's favorite foods: currywurst potato casserole.
That's how it's done:
You need these ingredients:
Potato wedges:
1kg potatoes
0.5 tsp salt
1 teaspoon paprika powder, sweet
20 ml cooking oil
Currywurst:
300 g bratwurst
cooking oil
Currysauce:
cooking oil
60g onions, diced
2 tbsp curry powder
1 tsp brown sugar
0.5 tsp salt
0.5 tsp pepper
2 tbsp tomato paste
100 ml vegetable broth
400 g chopped tomatoes in a can
100g ketchup
20 ml orange juice
2 tbsp wine vinegar
Aside from that:
150 g gratin cheese
Spring onions, to taste
This is how the preparation works:
Preheat oven to 180 °C fan oven.
For the potato wedges:
Wash, peel and cut the potatoes into wedges.
Place in a baking dish and mix well with salt, paprika powder and cooking oil.
Bake for 30 minutes.
For the currywurst:
Cut the bratwurst into 1 cm thick slices.
Heat the oil in a pan and fry the sausage slices on all sides.
Put aside.
For the curry sauce:
Heat cooking oil in a pot and sauté onion cubes until translucent.
Add curry powder, salt, pepper and tomato paste and fry briefly.
Deglaze with vegetable broth.
Add chopped tomatoes and ketchup and bring to the boil.
Season with wine vinegar and orange juice.
Layer the curry sauce together with the curry sausage slices on the baked potato wedges.
Sprinkle with gratin cheese.
Bake for another 15 minutes until the cheese is melted and lightly browned.
Sprinkle with spring onions if desired.
Clean up!
With this recipe you can save yourself a trip to the chip shop: Currywurst and potato casserole.
