The year 2024 is a leap year.
This will be particularly important to note in February.
With Leap Day, some important deadlines and dates may be postponed.

In 2024 it will be that time again.
With February 29th, February has one more day than usual. So instead of 365 days, the calendar year now has 366. But what effects does this leap day have?
Why are there leap years?
The Gregorian calendar is based on the rotation of the sun.
A year lasts as long as it takes the Earth to orbit the sun once.
This doesn't happen exactly after 365, but after 365.2424 days.
To compensate for this time, every four years there is one more day, i.e. a leap day, on February 29th.

People whose birthdays are on February 29th can finally celebrate on the right date again.
This also includes some celebrities with Leap Day birthdays.
In non-leap years this is usually postponed to March 1st.
Or the birthday children simply appear to be four times as young because they only “really” have a birthday every leap year.
However, the legal date is March 1st.
This is relevant, for example, for criminal responsibility, legal capacity or adulthood.
Leap year at work – these deadlines are important
There are also a few things to pay attention to at work.
The bad news first: Even if you work one more day in a leap year, you won't get paid more.
If February 29th falls on a working day, no wage compensation is provided.
Nevertheless, February is still the shortest month.
On February 29, in the last leap year of 2020, the extra working day affected fewer people because it fell on a Saturday.

The leap year also has an impact on the notice periods.
According to
anwalt.de,
a notice of termination that is to be received in the middle or at the end of the month must only be submitted on February 16th instead of February 15th in a leap year February, or on February 1st instead of January 31st.
Fixed-term contracts continue automatically if the employee continues to work after the fixed-term contract expires.
If the end of the contract is set on February 28th and the employee continues to work on February 29th, the contract is considered extended.

Annual deadlines and annual contracts run one day longer
Caution is also advised when it comes to important deadlines.
For contracts that speak of a one-year period, the calendar year is always assumed.
In a leap year, one year suddenly becomes 366 days.
If you look at it like that, the Netflix subscription is basically free for one day.
Billings such as operating costs, interest or unemployment benefits also extend over 366 days.
The payment of the pension is also delayed by one day.
