One of the most respected tequila brands in Mexico lands in Israel with the help of the Emma Weig company, and expands the shelves in a category that is increasingly bubbling here, and rightfully so.
The distillery, established almost two decades ago in the state's Jalisco province, maintains traditional production methods and makes sure to use 100% pure blue agave.
It undergoes slow cooking in stone ovens and double distillation, and is then aged in oak barrels from the United States, and cognac barrels from France.
This process is perfected in an exceptionally beautiful bottling, which is a ceramic carafe handcrafted, numbered and hand-painted by local artists in Mexico City.
The expedition includes, for now, four types of tequila, in different sizes - Grand Mayan Blanco (Silver) rich and deep with fruit and spice flavors (NIS 245-1,000), Grand Mayan Reposado smooth and with vanilla-caramel emphasis (NIS 360-1,700), Grand Mayan Ultra Aged is the top quality of the brand, which is produced in a limited annual edition (NIS 1,850 for a 750 ml bottle), as well as Grand Mayan Extra Anejo.
The latter, which was sent for tasting, is also based on 100% pure blue Weber agave, and undergoes double distillation and slow cooking, with an aging of Five years in the American-French barrels. The result provides receipts for this strictness, with a very smooth texture, a wonderful, almost wintery aroma, and an excellent taste of real tequila. Price: NIS 289-1,850. In one word:
