As part of the minimum wage increase on January 1, 2024, the upper limit for mini-jobs was also raised.

What applies now?

As of January 1, 2024, the statutory minimum wage rose to 12.41 euros per hour.

What does this mean compared to last year?

“The increase of 0.41 cents amounts to 3.4 percent and is therefore far behind the current loss of purchasing power,” is the sober conclusion of the

Bavarian Income Tax Aid (Lohi).

The new lower wage limit affects both employees subject to insurance and mini-jobbers.

The statutory minimum wage in Germany rose at the turn of the year.

Higher minimum wage: Where is the mini-job limit in 2024?

The minimum wage and mini-job earnings limit are “linked to each other,” explains

Lohi Bayern

in its statement (as of January 23rd).

The average monthly earnings limit for mini-jobbers will be at 538 euros this year and will allow “43 working hours per month as before”.

In order for the mini-job relationship to continue, earnings should not exceed 6,456 euros per year.

“In conclusion, if the hourly wage is higher than the minimum wage, the maximum permitted working hours in a mini-job relationship are reduced.”

Industry-specific minimum wage increases

What else has happened so far in 2024 when it comes to the minimum wage?

Many employees were also able to look forward to an increase at the turn of the year for industry-specific minimum wages set in collective agreements.

Lohi

Bayern

gives a few examples: “At the beginning of the year, the minimum wages rose, for example in roofing, chimney sweeping, scaffolding, electrical, painting and varnishing trades as well as in building cleaning, waste management and temporary employment industries.”

Minimum salary for trainees 2024

There has been a plus for many trainees since the turn of the year: the minimum salary in the first year of training has risen from 620 to 649 euros.

This affects training courses that began on January 1st.

Exceptions via collective agreement are possible.

“Trainees in the first year of training can look forward to at least 649 euros,” says the statement from

Lohi Bayern.

“In the second year of training there will be at least 766 euros as remuneration from January, in the third year of training at least 876 euros and in the fourth year of training at least 909 euros as remuneration.” Although there are no taxes at this level of income, the experts emphasize, “social security contributions still have to be paid and reduce the gross values.”
