Highlights: A study by the University of Glasgow examined what makes a person appear rich or poor, according to superficial judgments. People with a narrower and sharper face, a smiling mouth, raised eyebrows, close-set eyes, rosy cheeks and a lighter, warmer complexion are considered wealthier. The results suggest that class stereotypes explain the connection between facial appearance and judgments about people's social status. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg and Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, who are both billionaires, have some of the features mentioned in the study.

It turns out that you don't need to go into people's pockets.

You can simply examine their facial features to know if they are rich or poor.

A new study by the University of Glasgow surveyed and examined what makes a person appear rich or poor, according to superficial judgments.

The study, which was conducted among white participants from Western cultures, determined which facial features were associated with high or low social status - based on a personal perspective.

The findings, published in the APA Journal of Experimental Psychology, determined that people with a narrower and sharper face, a smiling mouth, raised eyebrows, close-set eyes, rosy cheeks and a lighter, warmer complexion are considered wealthier.

Respondents also associated these facial features with traits such as trustworthiness, competence, and warmth.

Conversely, people with wider facial features, a lowered mouth, low eyebrows, a short chin and a darker complexion are considered incompetent, less reliable - and poorer.

Although they were not mentioned by name in the study, the US media took pains to point out that two of the richest people in the world, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg and Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, who are both billionaires, have some of the features mentioned in the study. Zuckerberg has a narrow face and Bezos has warm skin. Dr

Thora Björnsdottir from the University of Stirling said: "In our research we provide new insights into what makes a person appear rich or poor and show how these judgments are linked to positive and negative stereotypes, such as ability versus inability. The results suggest that class stereotypes Social studies explain the connection between facial appearance and judgments about people's social status. This emphasizes that the stereotypes we hold are consequential to the way we perceive others - they mislead our perceptions. Our impressions of other people can lead to certain advantages or disadvantages for them."

The study looked at what qualities people look at when deciding, based on appearance alone, whether people are rich or poor.

They asked 15 men and 15 women with an average age of 22 to make quick judgments about a person's likely wealth or traits based on three-dimensional images shown to them.

Participants rated where they thought people fell on a seven-point scale - from poorest to richest.

As we mentioned, the faces of the "rich" were considered more reliable, smarter and more talented and were called by some "the face of the peaceful rich".

Professor Rachel Jack, from the University of Glasgow added: "These findings are not only valuable for advancing our understanding of key social perceptions, but can also help with future interventions designed to interrupt those biased perceptions."

This is not the first study that tried to judge a person's wealth by examining their face.

A 2017 study by the University of Toronto, published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, also found that people's faces may reveal whether they are rich or poor.

This study involved guessing the wealth of real people based on pictures, and the study participants guessed with 53% accuracy.

"Over time, your face manages to reflect and reveal the experiences you've had," said study author Nicholas Rolle, "even when we think we're not expressing something, remnants of those emotions are still there."
