Highlights: Tourism, 20.6 million departures between January and March - Last minute. After the resumption of Christmas and New Year - despite over 300,000 last minute cancellations due to the flu. Short trips - almost two thirds of the total - and overnight stays in tourist accommodation facilities preferred by over half of travellers. For holidays of 7 days or more, even if the hotel remains the first solution (for 2 out of 10 Italians), followed by second homes or the hospitality of friends and relatives.

After the resumption of Christmas and New Year - despite over 300,000 last minute cancellations due to the flu - Italian tourism demand would seem to hold up for 2024 too, albeit with shorter holidays, split into multiple departures and less concentrated on key dates.

What emerges from the Confcommercio Tourism Observatory is collaboration with SWG for the first quarter of 2024.

In fact, there will be 13 million Italians who, between January and March, will take one or more holidays for a total of 20.6 million departures, with a prevalence of short trips - almost two thirds of the total - and overnight stays in tourist accommodation facilities preferred by over half of travellers; for holidays of 7 days or more, even if the hotel remains the first solution (for 2 out of 10 Italians), followed by second homes or the hospitality of friends and relatives: a choice dictated, in all likelihood, also by budget availability.

As for destinations, for short breaks cities and places of art come in first place with 38% of preferences, while the mountains come in second place, again after big cities, for stays of average duration, from 3 to 5 nights : first sign of a tendency towards "white" holidays but no longer than a "week".

With an intense cultural offer - cities of art and villages - but also internal and coastal locations, the preferred destination regions are Tuscany, Lazio and Emilia Romagna, especially for short holidays, while, for longer trips, the preferred destination is Trentino Alto Adige.
