Three months before the start of the Girod'Italia 2024, on May 4th from Venaria Reale, in Piedmont, the pink jersey was presented at the Pinacoteca di Brera, in Milan.
It will be worn by the leader of the general classification in all stages, up to the final stage on May 26th in Rome.
For the ninth consecutive year, the top sponsor of the pink jersey is Enel, and inside the collar a significant tribute to the Invincibles of Grande Torino with the writing: "Grande Torino 1949 - Only fate won them", in memory of the Superga tragedy which occurred on the 4th May 1949.
"I believe it is a great recognition for an extraordinary team and on a tragic anniversary like that of May 4th it was right to remember it. Also because I go to Superga every year on May 4th and what strikes me is the large number of people present, even very young boys, like a passing of the baton from their father, from their grandfather to them so as not to forget the Grande Torino" said Urbano Cairo, president of RCSMediaGroup.
The pink jersey, designed again this year by Castelli, is the symbol that distinguishes the leader in the general classification and was established for the 1931 Giro. The first to wear it was Learco Guerra, winner of the first stage of 1931. In 88 editions, there are 263 athletes to have worn the pink jersey for at least one fraction in the history of the Giro, with Vincenzo Nibali the last Italian winner of the Corsa Rosa in 2016, present in Brera.
And during the presentation the link between the Giro d'Italia and the territory was also underlined, with the stages also passing through small, unique villages.
A bond that also explains Enel's sponsorship, as highlighted by Nicola Lanzetta, director of the Enel Group in Italy.
"Speaking of a Giro that touches every village, Enel has a distribution network that is the most widespread infrastructure we have in the country. The territory is one of the unique and peculiar beauties of Italy but also of our company, because every citizen, every village, every town has the right to use electricity and therefore the territory is certainly a point in common with the Giro d'Italia" highlighted Nicola Lanzetta.
