The number of active users on social media has risen to over 5 billion, equal to approximately 60% of the world population which, according to official UN estimates, has exceeded 8 billion people.
A study by the monitoring company Meltwater and the We areSocial agency comes to terms on the day Facebook turns 20, the platform that kicked off the social media era.
According to the study, compared to last year the number increased by 5.6%, exceeding the 0.9% increase in the world population.
The most populous social network is Facebook by Meta with 2.19 billion users.
Instagram, also by Meta, is second with 1.65 billion, followed closely by TikTok with 1.56 billion.
The average social media user spends two hours and 23 minutes a day on their favorite platform, using 6.7 platforms every month.
However, the report warns that accurate numbers are difficult to obtain due to automated accounts, popular bots, or people using different identities.
The most searched entry on Wikipedia according to the analysis was ChatGpt, the generative artificial intelligence software developed by OpenAI, underlining the explosion of interest in this technology.
