Highlights: Body odor is often a product of the metabolism of bacteria that live on our body skin. Diabetes, for example, is one of the most common factors that can affect body odor. Bad breath that just won't go away shouldn't be ignored, says Dr. Jennifer Caudle. A vagina with a fishy smell could be a sign that you have bacterial vaginosis (BV), a bacterial imbalance that may need to be treated with antibiotics, Dr. Caudlle said.

Before we start with a list of some warnings that come with different body odors, it's worth clarifying: it's important to understand that body odor is often a product of the metabolism of bacteria that live on our body skin, especially in areas with a lot of sweat glands.

The sweat itself, you might be surprised, is a salty, odorless liquid in itself.

In general, any emotional (stress) or medical condition (such as an infection) that leads to stress increases sweat secretion and may have a negative effect on body odor.

There are also a number of specific diseases and medical conditions that can lead to characteristic body odor.

Diabetes, for example, is one of the most common factors that can affect body odor.

During a severe complication of diabetes that is accompanied by a failure to balance blood sugar levels and the formation of acid and acetone (a condition known as diabetic ketoacidosis) a pungent body odor is one of the signs.

Hyperactivity of the thyroid gland may also increase sweating and thus lead to pungent body odor.

Diseases that cause liver and kidney failure, organs that are responsible, among other things, for breaking down and excreting toxins from the body, may also have a negative effect on body odor.

Dr. Jennifer Caudle explained on TikTok when bad body odor can be dangerous. According to her, four 'stinky' body odors should be cause for concern. "There are a lot of perfectly normal body odors out there.

I'm not saying that every body odor is a bad body odor," she noted. "These are just four that you should pay attention to," said the family doctor.

1. Bad breath that won't go away

If your bad breath persists after brushing your teeth and you notice it often, Dr. Caudle says you should see a doctor about it. 2. A vagina with a fishy smell

It's unrealistic to expect the female vagina to smell like perfume, but a fishy smell can be cause for concern, said Dr. Caudle.

"Ladies, if you smell fishy down there, you need to see your doctor," the doctor said.

This could be a sign that you have bacterial vaginosis (BV), she explained, a bacterial imbalance that may need to be treated with antibiotics.

Dr Caudle explained that while there are "good and bad bacteria hanging around" down there, an overgrowth of bad bacteria can cause this.

Apart from a fishy smell, the condition can also cause an unusual vaginal discharge that has a strong fishy smell, especially after sex, a change in color and consistency of the secretions, such as turning grayish-white and thin and watery.

Such an infection occurs when bacteria enter the urinary system, which includes the bladder. The urine and the kidneys. Usually, this infection begins in the urethra, and the bacteria begin to multiply once they are in the urinary tract. In most cases, the infection manifests itself in the bladder, but it can in principle occur in any part of the urinary system.
