Oranges are available year-round, but the peak citrus season is November to March.
Oranges from Spain in particular come onto the German market, as the
Federal Center for Nutrition (BZfE)
emphasizes.
But after eating the fruit, you don't have to throw away the peel because it makes an effective fertilizer.
You have two options for making the fertilizer.
Variant one is a liquid fertilizer, variant two is a fertilizer for spreading.
Please only use organic oranges for both varieties as you do not want to add any pesticide residue to your plants.
It is also important to avoid a waxy layer on the fruit.
Fertilizing with orange peels has the following advantages:
Orange peels contain nitrogen, which is important for plant growth.
The essential oils have an antibacterial effect and act as a natural fungicide.
The bowls are completely natural and cheap too.
Variant one: liquid fertilizer made from oranges
Place three squeezed orange halves in a screw-top glass and pour water to the top.
Let the peels steep in a dark, cool place for about three days.
An effective natural fertilizer is created, which can also be used as a natural pest control agent due to the essential oils it contains.

Option two: Chop the orange peel into small pieces
Peel the desired amount of oranges and chop the peel finely.
The pieces should be between 0.5 and one centimeter in size.
Place in the ground, preferably a few centimeters underground.
You can also chop the peel in a blender and add it to the water.

It is important to note that, similar to a fertilizer made from coffee, you only use oranges on plants that also benefit from an acidic soil environment.
Of course you can also use tangerine peels.
