The low-fat version is also healthier.

They belong to the carnival season like cookies to Christmas: doughnuts.

At least that's what the round pastry with a sweet filling is called in Bavaria.

In other places in Germany, people tend to call it Berliner, Kreppel, Pfannkuchen or Küchli.

Traditional yeast pastries are usually fried in fat.

However, since working with fat at home is not always easy to do or is popular, it is good that there is an alternative.

Simply make fat-free donuts yourself: Here's how it works

  • Warm the milk to lukewarm.

Don't let it get too hot, otherwise the yeast won't tolerate it.

Then put the flour in a bowl and make a depression in it.

  • In a second, smaller bowl, mix the milk with sugar and crumble the yeast into it.

When the yeast has dissolved, pour the mixture into the flour well and dust some flour on top.

Then let the mixture rest in a warm place for around 15 minutes.

  • Next, stir in the egg and a pinch of salt and add two tablespoons of margarine or butter.

Then knead everything together into a dough for five to ten minutes.

  • Now form eight balls of approximately the same size and place them on a baking tray lined with baking paper.

The dough balls are covered with a (clean) cloth.

Now the balls need to rise in a warm place for 45 minutes.

  • The donuts are baked in the oven at 160 degrees for around 20 to 30 minutes.

  • Now use a piping bag to fill the donuts with the filling of your choice - we recommend finely strained apricot jam.

  • Melt the remaining butter or margarine and spread it over the donuts.

Finally, you can sprinkle sugar or powdered sugar on the donuts, depending on your taste.

    Bon appetit!
