The delegation of Origin Italia, the Italian association of geographical indication consortia which represents over 95% of Italian geographical indications, was received yesterday at the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Sovereignty and Forestry (Masaf).

The meeting with the Masaf chief of staff, Raffaele Borriello, and with the new head of the ministry's department, Marco Lupo, concerned the implementation of the European GI reform which will take place in the coming months and the need to be able to develop it on a national level with appropriate measures.

 In the comparison also the discussion of how to support the effort of the 300 Protection Consortia recognized at Italian level, which over the years have seen a significant decrease in the contribution quotas for expenses related to bureaucratic obligations for maintaining the system, and the proliferation of national initiatives , regional and municipal ones aimed at establishing new brands and public recognitions, without real control and certification.

 The delegation of the Origin Italia Board of Directors also met Luca De Carlo, president of the Industry, Tourism and Agriculture Commission of the Senate, and Mirco Carloni, president of the Agriculture Commission of the Chamber of Deputies.

With the two presidents - a note informs - the need to provide an ad hoc regulatory instrument for the support and growth of the PDO PGI supply chains was reiterated, especially with regard to small consortia, and the protection of large PGIs.
