Women are more commonly affected by urethral cancer than men.
The symptoms are rather unspecific.
However, there is a first indication in the urine.
Compared to other types of cancer such as colon cancer, breast cancer, prostate cancer or lung cancer, urethral cancer occurs
rarely and affects women more often than men, according to information from the
University Hospital of Zurich (USZ) .
The causes of so-called urethral carcinoma (urethral carcinoma) are still largely unknown; instead, irritation and inflammation are suspected as triggers.
Since this type of cancer has no symptoms, it usually remains undetected for a long time.
However, urine can provide an indication of a possible illness.

According to the
German Cancer Society,
the first indication is usually blood in the urine (hematuria).
There are two different types: If the blood appears invisible, this is microhematuria.
However, it can also appear visibly as red urine, in which case it is a so-called macrohematuria.
Hematuria is a non-specific symptom.
This can therefore only be clarified and diagnosed through an examination by a doctor.
As a rule, a urethroscopy or urethroscopy is carried out.
This method is used to take a tissue sample from the urethra.
Other signs may include an increased urge to urinate.
This can occur if the urethra is already narrowed by the tumor and an increased amount of residual urine remains in the bladder.
In addition to an increased urge to urinate, this can also lead to an increased susceptibility to infections.
At the same time, a narrowing of the urethra can also cause three other problems:
Painful urination
Weakened urine stream or dribbling
Discomfort after sexual intercourse

Urethral cancer: Certain risk factors can promote this type of cancer
Although the causes of urethral cancer are not known, there are some factors that can increase the risk of developing the disease.
A connection is suspected between the occurrence of urethral carcinoma and repeated increased stress on the urethral tissue.
This can, for example, be the result of frequent or chronic urinary tract infections as well as sexually transmitted diseases.
In addition, urethral cancer can arise from a urethral caruncle.
This happens when the small, benign ulcer, about the size of a pea, turns malignant.
