Anyone who commits a traffic offense in the EU often suffers no consequences.

That should change now.

The European Parliament wants to introduce uniform rules.

Strasbourg - A majority of the European Parliament has voted to enforce driving bans across the EU.

So far it has been possible to drive a car in other EU countries without any problems if there is a driving ban in Germany.

That should change in the future.

“Anyone who commits a serious violation of the road traffic regulations in one country has forfeited their right to drive in the EU,” explained EU Parliament Vice President Jan-Christoph Oetjen.

According to the FDP politician, it is important to define violations uniformly and clearly.

EU driving bans for traffic offenders: Loss of driving license if you exceed the speed limit

The plan is to revoke driving licenses across the EU if you exceed the speed of 50 kilometers per hour.

In residential areas, even exceeding 30 km/h is enough to lose your driver's license.

In addition, it should be clarified after 25 days at the latest whether a driving ban is valid throughout the EU or not.

Similar regulations currently apply in Germany: Anyone who drives over 40 km/h too fast outside of a built-up area will receive a driving ban.

In urban areas this is already the case from 31 km/h.

With regard to the reform, SPD MEP Thomas Rudner emphasized that dangerous parking, dangerous overtaking, crossing a solid line and hit-and-run will also be recorded and should lead to a driving ban.

In addition, driving without a valid driver's license should be added to the list of serious traffic violations.

This would mean that information about driving license revocation would be automatically shared with the relevant EU country.

This is already the case with drunk driving or fatal traffic accidents.

The EU is currently planning another change for drivers: the digital driving license will soon be introduced.

EU driving ban reform could be a long time coming: negotiations with member states are still pending

However, it will take some time before these new requirements come into force: the member states have not yet announced a position on the project.

An agreement would have to be found with the EU states beforehand.

However, negotiations will only take place after the new European Parliament elections in summer 2024.

If the member states and parliament agreed, it would still take around two years until the new requirements were anchored in national law.
