The Apple Vision Pro is in stores.

Regardless of the advantages or disadvantages, the concept of glasses worries many users.

The first images are reminiscent of a science fiction world.

Silicon Valley – A woman walks up to her boyfriend or partner and, with a gesture, simply swaps his face for that of Hollywood star Leonardo DiCaprio.

Then she switches to Zac Efron.

This scene from a short video posted to

Reddit

shows a thought experiment that could theoretically be possible with the new Apple Vision Pro mixed reality headset.

Innovative, some think.

For others, however, this kind of manipulation of reality is above all scary.

Apple is shaping the virtual future: The Vision Pro headset

The new Apple Vision Pro has been officially available in stores in the USA since February 2nd and it is already dividing opinions around the world.

Not just because of the price - the headset costs $3,499 - but also because of what it represents: futuristic innovation.

To visualize an alternative reality.

Does the future look like this?

The work from Silicon Valley certainly suggests so.

The interactions and possible uses of such technology are diverse - from navigation to support in learning new skills or even medical procedures.

But there are also many dark sides.

It is not without reason that Google Glass, a comparable mixed reality headset, was taken off the market in 2016 due to a lack of data protection.

The aforementioned post on Reddit in particular recently caused a stir.

In the Internet forum, a developer published a concept for a “deep fake” application in which the faces of prominent actors are superimposed on the other person’s face.

Mixed Reality: Deep Fake Application Concerns Reddit Forum

The concept application is by no means an official application from Apple.

Rather, the developer wanted to show what would theoretically be possible.

Both curiosity, agreement and rejection are widespread in the comments column.

One user thinks this should be illegal.

Another commented: "I have to admit that this particular concept would have been so much fun," recalling the time when Snapchat pictures and videos of people with unnaturally delicate facial features or dog-like snouts circulated thanks to the app.

The concept of the Apple Vision Pro looks so real that some even think it is real.

But despite all the astonishment, there is still criticism.

It is not without reason that the German Ethics Council has been concerned with the possibilities and dangers of virtual reality (VR), mixed reality (MR) and artificial intelligence (AI) for years.

The tech giant continues to refine its technology;

This is not only proven by the Vision-Pro.

Apple also constantly releases new, sometimes revolutionary updates for its smartphones.

Science fiction becomes reality: Creepy Netflix series as a template?

One user is reminded of the science fiction series “Black Mirror” and writes: “The really scary part is when you can (re)create a whole person that isn't really there.

Then people start isolating themselves from real people and reality.

Creating a new romantic partner would be bad enough.

But imagine that a parent who has lost a child creates him as a virtual being that never grows up and never disappears.

These parents can then never properly process the loss.”

Utopia vs. dystopia: What advantages does the Apple Pro Vision really have on our coexistence?

To understand: The dystopian science fiction anthology series “Black Mirror” (based on the black, reflective smartphone screen) from Netflix deals with a (still) fictional technology and its effects on our social coexistence per episode.

In the third episode of the first season, “The Transparent Me,” people have an eye implant that records everything they see at any time and makes it playable again via a media library menu.

Sound familiar?

Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality and Mixed Reality: These are the differences

Unlike virtual reality (BR) glasses, in which you are completely immersed in the digital world, the Apple Vision Pro mixes virtual and real reality.

The difference to the third pair of glasses – augmented reality (AR) – is that in mixed reality, physical and digital objects can interact with each other.

In augmented reality, digital objects are simply inserted into the real world, without any interaction with it.

The fact is, the Vision Pro is on the market and probably won't disappear anytime soon.

Nevertheless, it's certainly not that easy to get used to the sight - neither that of a virtual reality nor that of a person who is currently immersed in it.
