Antonio Ciavarello, 50 years old, son-in-law of the late mafia boss Totò Riina, was arrested at dawn this morning by the Maltese police who executed a European arrest warrant issued by the Court of Brindisi on 24 January 2022. The man had taken refuge to Malta in an attempt to escape a final prison sentence.
Sources from the Maltese Ministry of the Interior reported this to ANSA.
After weeks of investigations, police surrounded Ciavarello's residence in the populous town of Mosta, in the center of the island, before making the arrest.
Appearing in court - local media add - the man confirmed his identity and expressed his consent to return to Italy.
