Munich – According to consumer advocates, consumers generally have a right to flawless products.

“Food that does not meet the legal requirements and is classified as unsafe must be removed from the market,” said Friedel Cramer, President of the Federal Office of Consumer Protection and Food Safety (BVL), in a press release.

From microbiological contamination to exceeding limit values, unacceptable ingredients, allergens and foreign bodies – the reasons for a recall are diverse.

A major spice recall was recently launched due to a banned pesticide.

Now the portal

lebensmittelwarning.de

warns about a meat product.

Meat recall: Manufacturer warns of increased germ levels

Currently affected by the recall is the item “Cabbage hare captain's brawn in slices” in the 200 gram pack with batch number 26 and the best-before dates March 8th, 2024, March 11th, 2024 and March 12th, 2024.

As the company reports via

produktwarning.eu

, it cannot be ruled out that the affected item has increased germ counts of E.Coli, enterobacteria and coagulase-positive staphylococci.

E. coli bacteria belong to the Shiga toxin-producing strain

Escherichia coli (STEC) and can have a significant organ-damaging effect and cause serious health consequences such as cerebral hemorrhages and neurological disorders.

As the

Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR)

writes, E.coli strains STEC and EHEC can also cause bloody diarrhea (hemorrhagic colitis) and kidney failure (hemolytic-uremic syndrome).

Toxin-producing staphylococcal strains can cause food-borne poisoning (intoxication) in humans.

Typical symptoms of staphylococcal poisoning are:

  • Vomit

  • nausea

  • Diarrhea

  • Circulation problems

Anyone who experiences the above symptoms after consuming the product should seek medical attention immediately.

Food Poisoning: How to Avoid Infection

According to the BVL, most food-borne infections occur when eating foods of animal origin.

Food-related intoxications can be triggered “by toxins that are already produced by the bacteria in the food and are ingested with food.”

In order to avoid food-borne infections or intoxidation, the BVL recommends observing the following rules:

  • Pay attention to the best before date (best before date), consumption periods and storage conditions.

  • Perishable foods should be purchased last or use a cooler bag when shopping.

  • The liquid that results from thawing frozen meat can contain germs.

These liquids should therefore no longer be used.

  • Raw and already cooked foods should be stored separately.

  • Avoid cross-contamination by first preparing dishes with a low germ risk (e.g. vegetables) and then dishes with meat.

  • If there are leftovers from prepared food, they should be stored in a cool place until later consumption.

Leftovers are often just warmed up.

In order to avoid the absorption of germs, leftovers should also be heated thoroughly.

Salmonella was recently detected in a dessert.

According to BVL, these were among the most common reasons for recalls last year.

A meat loaf also had to be recalled due to the risk of listeria.
