In their telephone conversation today, the Chinese and Russian presidents denounced the US's "policy of double containment of Russia and China".
Putin's foreign policy advisor Yuri Ushakov said this.
The two leaders reject "political and military pressure from the United States", added Ushakov, quoted by Tass.
According to the Russian news agency Ria Novosti, citing Chinese television CCTV, the Chinese president said that China and Russia must resolutely defend their sovereignty and resist "interference by external forces in their internal affairs".
Furthermore, according to Chinese television CCTV, cited by Tass, Xi said he was ready to work with Russia to develop "multilateral international cooperation" and the two heads of state agreed to "continue to exchange views on strategic issues of mutual interest ".
Xi and Putin also exchanged greetings for the upcoming Chinese New Year.
The Kremlin press service said that the discussion between the two leaders concerned the situation in the Middle East, Ukraine and the Asia-Pacific region.
On the Middle East, the Russian presidency said, the visions of Beijing and Moscow "completely coincide", both being in favor of a "political and diplomatic solution to the Palestinian problem within the international legal framework".
Speaking about the situation in the Asia-Pacific quadrant, Putin confirmed his position on the Taiwan issue in favor of the "one China" policy, the Kremlin concluded in a statement.
