National Corn Dog Day takes place in the USA on March 18th.

Corn dogs are a real classic

snack

.

It's not entirely certain who invented the corn dog, but one thing is clear: it doesn't get more American than this.

The casing of the sausages in the dough consists mainly of

corn flour

, which was considered a staple food of the indigenous population.

Hot dogs are an adaptation of the German

sausage

in a bun and were brought to the USA by immigrants.

The combination of these ingredients created a product that dominated a large part of the snack market, at

folk festivals and sporting events

, in the 20th century.

Today, the corn dog is considered an icon of

American fast food

.

So cook our recipe and let's celebrate National Corn Dog Day in the USA.

That's how it's done:

You only need a few ingredients:

  • Dough:

  • 100 g wheat flour

  • 180g corn flour

  • 1 tsp (5g) baking powder

  • 1 tsp salt

  • 1 tsp (10 g) honey

  • 1 egg

  • 180 ml buttermilk

  • Aside from that:

  • 400 g hot dog sausages (or Vienna sausages)

  • 1 liter frying oil

  • Mustard and ketchup

The preparation is simple:

  • Cut the sausages into thirds and set aside.

  • For the dough

: Mix the wheat flour, corn flour, baking powder, salt, honey, egg and buttermilk with the beaters of a hand mixer to form a homogeneous dough.

Let it soak for 10 minutes.

  • Heat frying oil in a deep pot.

  • Turn the sausages in the dough and fry them in the hot fat until golden brown (tip: the dough will stick even better if you turn the sausages in a little flour beforehand).

    Drain on kitchen paper.

  • Serve hot with ketchup and mustard.

  • Clean up!

  • These mini corn dogs taste great with ketchup and mustard.
