2023 was a difficult year for the canned fish sector: for canned tuna the increase in consumer price was 11.6% compared to 2022, with a loss in volume of 4.8%.

It is the snapshot of the company budgets of the Association of Fish Canners and Tonnare (Ancit), in noting how the 20-30% increase in production costs was not transferred entirely to the consumer but was largely absorbed by the production companies The costs of production activity, the Association notes, have reached intolerable levels: only the price of extra virgin olive oil has reached 9 euros per kilo, while the refined one exceeds 8.50 euros per kilo.

This is a runaway increase of 80% compared to the same range the previous year and the situation shows no signs of improving.

Added to this is the geopolitical situation in the Middle East which is having repercussions on freight rates, especially due to the passage of ships through the Suez Canal.

Sea freight for containers, the main mode of transport, has seen a huge increase in prices internationally.

An extremely worried sector, as the president of Ancit Giovanni Battista Valsecchi says.

"Unfortunately, the increase in the cost of some raw materials, in particular oil, suggests that the situation will not improve in the coming months - specifies the president - for our part, we will continue to convey to consumers the value of our products, renewing our commitment to maintaining the same high quality standards."
