Accessible sport as a driver of inclusion, participation, health and well-being for people with multiple sclerosis and neuromyelitis optica, a similar pathology: a memorandum of understanding was signed between Aism, the Italian Multiple Sclerosis Association and Uisp, the Italian Union of Sport for Everyone.
"Sport, by definition inclusive - notes the president of Aism, Francesco Vacca - is a powerful tool of social participation that supports and develops people's skills and functioning, not only at a competitive level but in everyone's daily life. It is an antidote to discrimination by overcoming stereotypes and prejudices that we still have to deal with today, and, in the context of multiple sclerosis and neuromyelitis optica and more generally of people with serious pathologies, it represents a powerful factor for the quality of life, starting from young people".
The right to sport also means the right to health - underlines Mario Alberto Battaglia, president of Fism, the Italian Multiple Sclerosis Foundation.
Many research projects carried out by Aism with its Foundation demonstrate the important impact of sport on the lives of people with multiple sclerosis and related pathologies.
With Uisp we will develop further research projects, exploring the benefits deriving from access to sport in order to better understand the needs and effectiveness of sport on their quality of life and the positive impact on the community".
With Uisp, Aism is committed to working to guarantee access to sports facilities for people with multiple sclerosis, neuromyelitis optica and with disabilities, through the implementation of inclusive policies, awareness-raising, training, social planning, research, adaptation of sports infrastructures to make them accessible to all, also through the redevelopment of sports facilities and the distribution of sports equipment for disadvantaged areas.
