A “person who complains little” complains: The topping on his roll is too thin and the price is too thick.

The bakery chain takes a stand.

Ötigheim - How much can a sandwich cost?

Not so much, says a baker's customer.

He describes his case in a local Facebook group.

“I'm normally a person who doesn't complain much,” he begins his post from February 1st.

“But when I was at one of our bakers, I almost fell over.

Since yesterday they have increased the prices.”

“A really tiny grain roll”, documented, for 4 euros: customer complains

He also shows two photos of his purchase, which he finely filleted on a plate at home.

His verdict: “A really tiny grain roll with butter that you have to look for, a lettuce leaf from yesterday, two!!!

Slices of egg and three wafer-thin slices of Camembert for a solid 4.00 euros.

I wanted to leave it there for them, but I thought I'd take it with me, open it up and share it with the world.

That's not just a cheek, it's the final reason why I'll bake and top my rolls myself in the future or get them at Aldi for 40 cents."

The customer posted these two photos with his complaint.

By the way, the whole thing takes place in Ötigheim (Baden-Württemberg), where these baked goods are called “Wecken”.

In Bavaria they say “rolls”, we use the High German term “brötchen” in this article.

The disappointed customer doesn't reveal the baker's name, but it's easy to recognize it from the bag: it's the Hatz chain, which operates around a dozen branches around Karlsruhe and Rastatt.

Price complaint about bakers: “It was my favorite too!

But it’s become too expensive for me!”

This has a high-priced reputation among other users.

“It was my favorite too!

But it has become too expensive for me!” Others also think that the four euros for the snack in question is too high.

“I also think it’s exaggerated,” “The bakery is expensive anyway.

Sausage rolls are also available in many butcher shops and are better served there.”

Another one – like the original poster – brings Aldi into play.

And one says: “You can get sandwiches for 2.50 euros at the gas station.” The prices at the bakery are always a topic of discussion among customers – one woman recently turned her back on the entire guild because of this.

Now the goods from a craft baker and from a discounter are certainly not comparable and are made differently with different ingredients.

The Hatz bakery chain also refers to this.

After an inquiry from our editorial team, management commented in detail directly below the Facebook post.

“Due to massive price increases at our supplier for the roll toppings,” it says, “we were forced to adjust the prices as of February 1, 2024.

It was important to us to only pass on the supplier's effective price increase.

By changing, reducing delivery cycles with the supplier, we were able to avert even higher price increases.” The chain emphasizes that there have been no price adjustments since October 2022 despite increased costs.

Bakery chain from the Karlsruhe area takes a stand - and explains its prices

Hatz also explains how the comparatively high prices come about: “We get the toppings for our sandwiches from a regional manufacturer.

Excellent quality through good rearing conditions for the animals and sustainability are very important to us.

This manufacturer is also an inclusion company.

We have been supporting people with disabilities working there for many years, giving them perspective and thus helping to maintain jobs.

But this is also noticeable for us in the higher purchase price of the goods, which we think is worth it.”

Bakery chain admits: “Distribution of butter, lettuce leaves and egg slices do not meet the requirements”

The chain also addresses the specific case in its long statement.

It is “a special grain roll, which is handmade and freshly baked by our bakers.

The use of regional ingredients is also very important to us.” The size “seems to be within the normal range when you look at the plate”.

At the same time, the bakery company also admits a small mistake.

“But we are also happy to admit that the distribution of the butter, the lettuce leaf and egg slices do not correspond to the specifications that we would like to offer our customers.” He invites the dissatisfied customer to be won back with a replacement.

“We define value for money as a price that is appropriate and not too expensive in relation to its value (with all its costs),” emphasizes the company, also pointing out the significant decline in the number of classic bakery businesses.

“The decision as to where you buy your traditionally produced baked goods in the future probably depends less on where you want to buy them - but rather on where you can still buy them.” As a Rewe customer once opened his meatloaf roll , he couldn't believe his eyes.
