Why do we call pain both what we feel when we break an arm and what we feel when a loved one hurts us?

Ultimately it is a form of communication, from the outside (i.e. the body) to the inside (the mind): pain signals us of danger and pushes us to seek help (or perhaps a new gift, a new reason to be).
