Food is becoming more expensive in Austria: customers pay particularly high here

Since the beginning of December 2023, the Vienna Chamber of Labor (AK Vienna) has been investigating the extent to which food prices are rising in Austria at seven Viennese supermarkets and discounters.

The supermarkets in the test were Hofer, Lidl, Penny, Billa, Billa Plus, Interspar and Spar.

It was found that the cheapest food and some cleaning products have become more expensive by an average of 1.6 percent within a year.

Food in particular rose significantly, although there was no good reason for this.

If the price increase is considered from December 2021 to 2023, the cheapest foods became significantly more expensive.

Above all, a continuous increase until March 2023 led to the shopping basket consisting of the 40 cheapest foods becoming more expensive by 43.9 percent.

According to AK Vienna, the price for a kilogram of potatoes rose particularly sharply.

In December 2022, the price was still an average of 0.78 euros.

In December 2023, the kilogram already cost 1.14 euros, which corresponds to an increase of 46 percent.

Ski holidays in Austria could also become significantly more expensive due to the price increases.

The North Rhine-Westphalia Consumer Center continuously monitors the market situation in Germany.

Here too, food prices have risen significantly within a year.

In December 2023, according to data from the Federal Statistical Office, the increase in food prices was 4.6 percent compared to the previous year.

Since mid-2021, these have even increased by almost 29 percent.

The comparison took all food groups into account and not, as in Austria, just a selection of 40 cheapest foods.

This explains the significantly stronger increase in Germany.

Flour is also one of the strongest price increases, with an increase of around 88 percent.
