Bananas are not only sweet, but also contain many vitamins.

To ensure that they remain tasty for a long time, proper storage is crucial.

In the supermarket they are still bright yellow, but after a night in the fruit basket they already have the first brown spots?

Bananas are not exactly easy to store.

But with a few simple kitchen tricks, even the diva among tropical fruits can stay fresher for longer.

What makes bananas so healthy

Bananas not only contain vitamin B, vitamin C, magnesium and potassium, but also lots of fructose and carbohydrates.

This makes them real energy bombs.

Storing bananas correctly: Six tips for a longer shelf life

  • Buy specimens that are not yet very mature.

Bananas ripen just like plums and pears.

This means that you can go to the store to buy fruit whose skin is still slightly green.

  • As exotic bananas, they can't handle the cold.

So they have no place in the fridge - not even in the vegetable compartment.

Instead, they like temperatures around 16 degrees.

  • Bananas are perennial plants and as such are very sensitive to pressure.

It is therefore advisable to store bananas hanging - or at least not to stack them on top of each other in the fruit basket.

  • It is best to store bananas in the shade.

Because direct sunlight also accelerates ripening.

  • Apples and bananas don't mix.

Apples give off a lot of ethylene.

The gas causes surrounding fruit to ripen and brown more quickly.

Therefore, if you do not want to eat the fruit quickly, do not store apples and bananas side by side, but rather at least one meter apart.

  • Bananas themselves also secrete ethylene.

This happens via the brown stalk at the top.

    Our tip:

Wrap it with cling film or (more environmentally friendly) with a beeswax cloth.

In this way, no oxygen reaches the stem and the ripening process is significantly slowed down.

  • Only store bananas and apples next to each other if everything will be consumed quickly.

How do you store bananas properly?

Shady, cool, hanging and far away from apples or other fruits that secrete a lot of ethylene, such as pears or peaches: the ideal storage place for bananas is actually the pantry or the cellar.

Brown bananas: eat or throw away?

If the bananas do turn brown, they are by no means destined for the organic waste bin.

Brown bananas contain a particularly high amount of sugar.

This makes them excellent candidates for classics like banana bread or trend foods like smoothies or nice cream.
