Greta Thunberg on all fronts.

After participating on Saturday in a rally of opponents of the A69 motorway in Tarn, the young Swedish activist announced her presence this Sunday in Bordeaux (Gironde) for a demonstration against an oil exploitation project in the Arcachon basin .

At the call of the Stop Oil Bassin d'Arcachon collective, a rally is planned for 2 p.m., Place de la Victoire, to protest against this project to drill eight new oil wells in the forest of La Teste-de-Buch, led by the Canadian company Vermilion Energy.

The procession will then connect the Miroir d’Eau.

“This must stop”: Greta Thunberg in Tarn to support opponents of the A69 motorway

Greta Thunberg is not the only figure of activism against climate change who should be present at this demonstration.

The French environmental activist Camille Étienne, who has already denounced this project several times on her networks and in the media, and the head of the environmental list in the European elections, Marie Toussaint, are also expected.

Strong support for the EELV mayor of Bordeaux, Pierre Hurmic, who also announced that he would join the demonstrators.

The environmental organizations Extinction Rebellion and Greenpeace have, for their part, called on their activists to mobilize massively.

A contested project

The Canadian company Vermilion Energy already operates around fifty wells south of the La Teste-de-Buch forest.

On November 20, it obtained a favorable opinion from a public inquiry to drill eight new wells on the Cazaux deposit “in order to sustain the production activity with visibility at least until 2030”, or even 2040. The drilling would take place on land ravaged by a mega fire in 2022, already exploited as part of an oil activity.

This project angers environmental defenders, who see “ecological nonsense” since the government has committed to reducing the use of fossil fuels by 30% by 2030, then by 40 to 50% in 2050. Marie Toussaint, head of the EELV list in the European elections, had described the project as “an aberration”, recalls France 3 Bordeaux.

“The Arcachon basin is suffering from floods, the retreat of the coastline, megafires and we want to continue drilling oil wells in a forest that has burned?

This is cynicism!
