"An immediate humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza" combined with the "unconditional release of the Israeli hostages", humanitarian aid in the Strip and a push for an international peace conference.
These are the main points of the commitments asked of the government in the motion proposed by the Democratic Party, first signatory Elly Schlein, and discussed on Tuesday in the Chamber.
The document has 28 premises in all, starting from the recognition of Hamas' responsibilities in the attacks of 7 October 2023 ("causing not only death but also a collective shock in Israeli society - we read in the text - for what was defined as the deadliest attack since the Shoah") and by the Israeli government's response by "authorizing the country's largest military mobilization since the 1973 Yom Kippur war and calling for the evacuation of Palestinians living in the city of Gaza and in the north of the Gaza Strip to the south."
The commitments requested from the executive are also substantial: from the end of hostilities to diplomatic action "particularly within the European Union, to promote initiatives to de-escalation of tension in the Middle East and with the aim of celebrating - as proposed in the conclusions of the Council meeting of 27 October 2023 - an international peace conference that will put an end to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, through the political solution of 'two peoples, two states', in line with the UN resolutions".
The Dems also ask to "take action to promote, in all multilateral forums, an international interposition mission in Gaza, under the aegis of the United Nations, which involves the Arab countries that can assume responsibility for the reconstruction of the Strip", to "support the Union European Union in rapidly implementing the sanctions already decided against Hamas" and to urge the EU to "prepare a package of sanctions against the settlers".
There is no shortage of requests to "restore funds for Italian NGOs operating in Palestine and Israel" and to "support, within a European framework, initiatives aimed at guaranteeing maritime safety in the Red Sea".
