"NATO remains ready to defend all its allies. Any statement that talks about the possibility that member countries will not defend each other puts the security of all of us at risk, including that of the USA, and exposes American and European soldiers to increasing risks."
This is how NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg responded to Donald Trump's recent statements.
Trump, according to what he himself told and reported by the New York Times, when he was president told NATO leaders that he would "encourage" Russia to "do whatever the hell it wanted" to countries that had not paid their dues to the alliance.
A statement destined to arouse fears among the members of the Alliance to which Stoltenberg immediately wanted to reply, underlining that the will and capacity for mutual defense between NATO partners remains unchanged.
"I expect - underlined the Secretary General of the Alliance - that, regardless of who wins the presidential elections, the United States will remain a strong and faithful ally within NATO".
