The spy comedy
Argylle
remained at the top of the North American box office for its second weekend of release, according to estimates on Sunday from specialist firm Exhibitor Relations.
But Matthew Vaughn's film, starring former Superman Henry Cavill, recorded a sharp drop in revenue, with 6.5 million dollars compared to 18 the previous weekend, while North American cinemas were deserted on Sunday because of the Super Bowl, the annual high mass of American football.
This 2h19 parody, co-produced by Apple and distributed by Universal, recounts the misadventures of an author of successful spy thrillers.
With a budget of $200 million, the revenues recorded so far make it
“the first big flop of the year
,” according to Variety magazine
.

In second place,
Lisa Frankenstein
from Focus Features Studios, raked in $3.8 million for its release weekend.
The film is directed by Zelda Williams, daughter of the late actor and comedian Robin Williams, and mixes romance, horror and humor.
The action film
The Beekeeper
(MGM), which dominated the North American box office for several weeks, is in third place with $3.5 million in revenue.
In fourth place are the first three episodes of season 4 of the hit series about the life of Jesus Christ,
The Chosen
.
These episodes, which the producers of the series chose to release in theaters, grossed $3.2 million.
The eccentric chocolatier,
Wonka
(Warner Bros), played by Timothée Chalamet, follows suit with $3.1 million for its ninth week of operation.
According to analytics company Comscore, movie ticket sales for the weekend are near an all-time low for a Super Bowl weekend, at just $42 million.
