Foreign workers in the construction of the light rail, Jabotinsky axis Petah Tikva, April 23, 2021/Reuven Castro
At the outbreak of the Iron Swords War there is a severe shortage of workers in the construction industry in Israel, due to the non-entry of Palestinian workers and the non-arrival of foreign workers in large numbers, which are supposed to provide an answer to the limited workforce.
Following this, Shaul Tam, an economist at the Competition Authority, announced that the authority would investigate why, despite the great need, foreign workers had not been brought to Israel since the beginning of the war.
The message was delivered to the chairman of the committee for foreign workers, MK Eliyahu Rabivo, who has already held several discussions in the field.
According to the announcement, the Competition Authority is trying to find out what the specific reason is for not bringing new workers to Israel, and whether there is a link of competitiveness between 50 personnel corporations engaged in the field.
It is important to note that in the past contractors brought in foreign workers without supervision or monitoring, but later only personnel corporations received a permit for this.
The announcement shows that one of the possible reasons why the corporations do not encourage the entry of workers is to help the existing workers maintain their high wages, since the wages in the profession have risen drastically due to the lack of supply of workers, thus increasing the income of the corporations, who, as you know, earn a percentage of the workers' monthly wages .
Ravivo claimed that "the government's lack of policy regarding the entry of Palestinian workers and the departure of some of the foreign workers created a crisis in the construction industry that is going to be reflected in apartment prices in the years to come."
