Network fees will rise by 25 percent in 2024 – impact on electricity prices

Due to the elimination of the state subsidy of 5.5 billion euros for transmission network fees, electricity network fees will rise by around 25 percent.

The subsidy was canceled in the wake of the budget crisis.

Distribution network operators are now passing these additional costs on to households.

Households in Baden-Württemberg and North Rhine-Westphalia are particularly badly affected, according to Verivox.

The impact is weakest in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Brandenburg.

New electricity provider: When does it make sense to change?

“But there are also electricity providers who do not increase their prices thanks to lower procurement costs.

We therefore advise everyone who is affected by price increases or is still stuck with expensive tariffs from the time of the energy price crisis in 2022 to compare the available offers and, if necessary, change.

Anyone who switches from the basic supply tariff to the cheapest offer with a price guarantee can currently save over 700 euros per year on average across Germany,” says Thorsten Storck, energy expert at Verivox.

The upcoming price increase can be partially cushioned by changing provider.

There are often cheaper offers for new customers or, in some cases, even a few free months to get you started.

According to Verivox, the gross electricity price for new customers is around 26 cents per kilowatt hour (kWh).

Compared to the average of 37.27 cents, you can often save a lot by taking out a new contract.

In the event of a price increase, there is a special right of termination, the consumer advice center informs.

This can usually be used until the date of the price change.

Cancellations must always be made in text form.

In addition, a new provider should be found as quickly as possible to prevent a gap in the electricity supply.

According to Check24

You can currently save up to 800 euros by switching providers.

It is also recommended to conclude new contracts with a price guarantee in order to avoid increases.
