While energy costs and food prices continue to rise, the poverty line is getting closer for many citizens.

Could you soon be one of those affected?

Prices rise, but incomes do not.

For many people in Germany, shopping is becoming less and less fun - while the feeling of having to count every euro is constantly growing.

Then energy prices will also rise and hardly any consumer can really imagine how everything will continue.

Anyone who studies in Germany or is a single parent and can therefore only work part-time is already at risk of poverty.

Is the poverty line getting closer for others too?

On the verge of poverty: Federal Statistical Office publishes precise figures

First of all, one fact: According to stuttgarter-zeitung.de

, it is not fixed at what point one is considered “poor” in this country

.

RUHR24 also reports on this in detail.

The Federal Statistical Office provides the most current figures - but only for the year 2021. The following year, which is all exciting, still needs to be evaluated.

In any case, in 2021 the following applied: “The threshold for a person living alone [is] 1,148 euros net per month, including salaries and social benefits,” according to the portal.

There are also certain differences depending on the federal state - "in Baden-Württemberg, for example, the poverty risk limit (2021) is 1,220 euros and therefore around 200 euros higher than in Thuringia," says the Federal Statistical Office.

Of course, it's clear as day that everyone with an income like that, or even less, should save every cent to get through the month.

The proportion of poor people has increased significantly - the institute comments on the situation in Germany

“However, there are various methods for precisely calculating the income limits,” says the report from the Federal Statistical Office.

The number of people living in the household is crucial for calculating the exact poverty line.

“In Germany, the proportion of poor people has increased significantly in the last decade,” says the 2022 report from the Economic and Social Sciences Institute. The trend is rising.

“Poor people have to do without everyday goods, they live in smaller living spaces or have poorer health.” Mannheim, for example, will lack around 17,000 new apartments by 2040.

According to the institute, this should, among other things, lead to poor people having significantly less trust in the actions of political actors.

Poverty in Germany has become significantly worse - according to the institute, this has to happen so that the situation gets better

The Economic and Social Sciences Institute assumes that the high inflation as a result of the Ukraine war is significantly increasing poverty in Germany.

The institute's proposed solution: “In order to improve the situation of poor households, but also to strengthen trust in our democratic system, targeted political measures are required.

This includes, in particular, the promotion of employment subject to social insurance contributions and the increase in standard rates for basic security.”

“In addition, social equal opportunities must be reduced through forward-planned and socially designed public housing as well as the reduction of educational inequalities,” the report from the Economic and Social Sciences Institute continues.

Sounds good, right?
