Iran has sentenced Safa Aeli, the uncle of Mahsa Amini, who died in police custody because she was not wearing the hijab properly, to five years and four months in prison on various charges, human rights activists said on social media.
The Revolutionary Court of Saqqez, Amini's hometown in Kurdistan province, announced that, according to the law, the 30-year-old Aeli will serve 3 and a half years of his sentence in prison.
He was accused of "gathering information and colluding against national security", "propaganda against the system" and "insulting leader Ali Khamenei" during the protests.
The uncle was also banned from leaving the country for two years and from writing a biography of a Basij member killed during the protests.
Aeli was arrested in September, days before the first anniversary of Amini's death, and was later released on bail.
