According to the 2023 edition of the Education First company's ranking on mastery of the English language, the French appear to be dunces in this area.
In this list dominated by the Dutch, we lag behind in 30th place (out of 34) among European countries.
It is therefore not surprising that cinemas in France still mainly favor the French version (VF), unlike in the Netherlands where the original version (VO) at the cinema is the rule, with cartoons being the exception. .
“Dubbed versions are also very present in Germany, Spain and Italy,” observes Martin Barnier, film historian and professor at Lumière Lyon 2 University. In countries with small populations, whose languages are not dominant, we massively goes to the original version.
In Denmark, for example, the only dubbed films are Disney films.
