" Good luck !
» The exclamation springs from the mouth of the director of an independent cinema in the Paris suburbs.
We have just announced our intention to write an article on the place of the original version (VO) in cinemas and on the reasons for the imbalance observed between Paris and its suburbs.
Trying to explain why the French capital is also that of film buffs keen to watch works in the most authentic way possible, when its neighbors most often lean towards the French version (VF), would amount to venturing into slippery territory.
Level of education, political choices... Some of the reasons put forward can quickly inflame the debate.
In a study dating from 2017, data journalist Yann Guégan observed, with supporting data, that the share of the French population having completed higher education was 6 points higher in cities where it was possible to see at least one film in original version.
Likewise, by only taking into account the votes of the inhabitants of these communes, he deduced that Jean-Luc Mélenchon (LFI) would have reached the second round of the presidential election that year, ahead of François Fillon (LR) and Marine Le Pen (RN).
