Ilaria Salis' family members "unfortunately have wasted a year: if they had immediately asked for house arrest in Hungary, all this perhaps would not have happened. It is a great result that they are convinced, now let's think step by step. It would be a great result if the Hungarian judge would grant them. We then hope to be able to operate on the agreements, our agreements provide that once prison detention has ceased then the international agreement rule can be triggered according to which it is possible to request that house arrest be served in Italy".
Thus the Minister of Justice Carlo Nordio on Sky Tg24.
Salis: 'Different treatment between Marchesi and my daughter'
Discovering the mural depicting her hanged daughter was "devastating", it is "a death threat. We are worried about Ilaria's safety. Both in prison and if she manages to obtain house arrest in Hungary".
Roberto Salis says this in an interview with La Stampa, recalling how Ilaria "had always been against" asking for house arrest in Hungary.
"Also because if she were found guilty - she explains - under Hungarian law, house arrest does not cumulate the sentence".
But now "things have changed. They have made us understand that house arrest in Hungary is an obligatory step in order to hope to obtain house arrest in Italy".
For Salis and his wife, one hypothesis is to go and live in Hungary: "our lawyer is working on the optimal logistical solution. We need 51 thousand euros in deposit and a safe and monitored place. We plan to close the procedures necessary to present the apply by the end of the month."
Raising the case has brought some improvements in prison treatment, "it is right to recognize this, credit must be given to the Hungarian authorities - he observes -. There are very positive things".
For example, "the prosecution documents have been made available, but translations into Italian of fundamental documents for the defense are still missing".
The next hearing has "been brought forward to March 28. Time is tight".
Meanwhile, Gabriele Marchesi, involved in the same proceedings for the clashes with the Hungarian Nazis, will remain under house arrest in Italy: "I think that faced with such different treatment between two people in the same conditions, two Italian citizens - he underlines - the president could intervene of the Republic. I hope so. Because he is the guarantor of the balance between the different powers of the State".
