A baby elephant was born at Halle Zoo, surrounded by his family who lovingly care for the little one.
Only grandmother and father were missing.
The baby elephant was born at the Halle Mountain Zoo at the beginning of February, making it the youngest member of the trunk family, as the zoo announced on
.
The birth went smoothly.
His mother, the elephant Tana, “took very good care of her young animal and helped him to his feet with her trunk,” writes the mountain zoo.
The little bull was very active just a few hours after birth.

Almost the entire elephant family was present at the birth
Her older elephant children, two girls named Tamika and Elani, would have stood by their mother during the birth.
“The older Tamika in particular is already involved in looking after her little brother,” reveals the zoo.
However, his father, a bull named Abu, moved to the Schönbrunn Zoo in his native Vienna in the spring of 2023 and was therefore unable to be present at the birth of his son.
But “since elephant bulls don’t have the closest relationship with their children anyway, that’s not a big deal,” the mountain zoo reassures on

A lucky elephant orphan stumbles while running - but his carers are there immediately.
At birth, a baby elephant weighs around 100 kilograms.
This corresponds to around three to percent of its later weight as an adult elephant.

With grandmother Pori, who is also the lead cow of the elephant family, they were not sure how she could behave towards her grandson.
She therefore followed the birth from a safe distance, but was able to communicate with her herd at any time via visual contact and infrasound (sound with a frequency that humans cannot hear).
A reunion of the entire elephant family is planned in the near future.

Elephant cows support birth and have a kindergarten
Elephants are very social animals and, according to
Peta,
have the “best social network of any land mammal.”
The herd has a strong bond and does not leave an expectant mother alone, even during birth.
The other cows in the herd support and protect the giving birth elephant.
Almost like midwives, various members of the herd assist her.
They take good care of the expectant mother, keep her company when she is in labor, give her support or keep other elephants away from her.
Once the calf is finally born, the elephant midwives help remove the egg membranes and use their trunks to stand the newborn on its feet.
In the case of Indian elephants, the calves are later cared for in a kind of kindergarten.
A female elephant then looks after the young animals and makes sure that none of the small elephants strays too far from the herd while the rest go looking for food.
